Bishop Diego passed its first home boys basketball test on Monday night with a narrow 56-54 decision over Nipomo.
Matthew Cunningham, a 6-1 junior guard, tossed in 19 of his game-high 27 points in the second half, including 10 in the fourth quarter.
“Simly put, Matthew took over in the second half,” said coach James Coronado. “Time and time again, he got timely buckets or kicked out passes for 3’s. I simply got out of his way and let him do his thing. He made the right play down the stretch over and over.
“Couple that with some great defense and we got a good win vs a good Npomo team. Kai Morphy hit some timely 3’s and finished with 17 points to complement Cunningham.”
Nipomo was led by Luis Dimudia and Joey Garcia, each finishing with 14 points.
