Community members are invited to join online Wednesday, May 27, and in-person on Thursday, May 28, to learn more about the latest design updates and next steps to implement the Castillo Street Undercrossing Bicycle and Pedestrian Facility Improvements Project.
With City Council support, staff will apply for grant funding from the State’s Active Transportation Program Cycle 8 to design and construct bicycle and pedestrian safety enhancements along Castillo and Haley Streets.
Both meetings will be 5:30-7 p.m. and the in-person meeting will be on the sidewalk at the intersection of Haley and De La Vina streets.
The purpose of the project is to increase the safety of the walking and biking connection between the West Downtown and Waterfront neighborhoods, and provide safe access to coastal attractions, McKinley Elementary School, and Santa Barbara City College, the city said.
The city developed conceptual plans for pedestrian and bicycle facility improvements within the Castillo Street Undercrossing, and along the approaches to the undercrossing.
The latest plans include a design revision between the intersection of Castillo and Montecito streets to Cabrillo Boulevard, which includes raised bike lanes on both sides of the street.
With City Council’s support, city staff plan to submit a grant application in June.
