A memorial bench dedicated to Jack Garvin, who served with distinction for two decades on the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District Board, was unveiled in a ceremony on Oct. 23.

“Placed prominently at the entrance of Delta High School, the bench stands as a lasting tribute to a man whose life was deeply intertwined with the school’s mission and community,” the district said.

Inscribed with a message honoring Garvin’s legacy, the bench was introduced by district leaders to the delight of Garvin’s family, district staff, and current and former board members.

Garvin, who retired following the Dec. 10, 2024 School Board meeting, passed away peacefully at home in June 2025 at the age of 90.

“Jack had a soft spot for the Delta High School community,” said his wife Inge Garvin. “He believed the true spirit of Delta was found in the bond between teachers and students.

“To have his bench placed so prominently is an honor to his legacy, the many years of donating scholarships to Delta students, and a tribute to his unwavering commitment to education.

“My hope is that those who sit here on Jack’s Bench will take a moment to reflect, to dream, to read, and journey forward with a smile and a heart full of joy and Aloha.”

Garvin’s impact on education spanned nearly 67 years. He mentored, tutored and advised countless students, teachers, staff, board members and superintendents.

Known for his plain talk and common sense, Garvin ensured that elected officials and the public understood the realities facing SMJUHSD.

Before his board service, Garvin spent 19 years as superintendent of the Orcutt Union School District, where he was equally admired for his leadership and dedication.

“The bench serves not only as a memorial but as a place of inspiration, inviting future generations to sit, reflect, and carry forward the values Garvin championed,” the district said.
