Dos Pueblos’ Mia Reveles hit two 2-run homers and Georgia Wilson drove in two more runs and pitched a 4-hitter to beat visiting San Marcos 6-1 in Channel League action Friday.
Reveles hit the dingers in the first and second innings — both times just after Bella Nuño walked.
That was the result of a hunch that paid off. Reveles was moved from the No. 4 spot to No. 2 to hit behind Nuño.
“This was quite a game for us today and quite a game for Mia,” Charger coach Mike Gerken said. “We had a feeling Bella wasn’t going to get too many pitches today and knew we needed someone behind her who could cause some damage, so we moved Mia from the four spot to two.
“She’s been hitting the ball well lately and it proved to be the right move.”
From there, he added, “the rest was all about Georgia Wilson and the double play.”
Wilson, who helped her own cause by driving in runs in the first and fifth innings, gave up just four hits — and when San Marcos threatened to rally, the Charger defense came though with inning-ending double plays in the first, second and fifth innings.
“Georgia has also been swinging a hot bat,” Gerken said. “She’s 7-10 in our last three games. Her two RBI were much needed against a dangerous Royals line up.
“Trisha Lo and Anastasia Brunner also made big plays in the outfield to prevent more San Marcos runs.”
The Royals got on the board in the sixth inning. Catcher Gigi Gritt led off the inning with a walk, and Cindy Villa came in as a courtesy runner. One out later, Kamilah Morales singled, moving Villa to second. With two outs, Charlotte Hastings singled to the right field fence, driving home Villa.
“DP took advantage of several base-running mistakes, resulting in three inning-ending double plays,” San Marcos coach Jeff Swann said. “That’s tough to overcome. We did a good job of putting the bat on the ball, but DP made some solid defensive plays throughout the game.”
Reveles and Wilson both went 2-for-3 for Dos Pueblos, and Gritt was 2-for-2 with a walk for San Marcos. The Royals’ Caitlyn Early “made some fine defensive plays late in the game,” Swann said.
The Chargers improve to 4-0 in Channel League play and 7-3 overall. The Royals are 2-2 and 5-2.
