The initiative is designed to make essential veterinary care more accessible, reduce shelter overcrowding, and improve adoption outcomes across the region, Santa Barbara Humane said.

Since 2024, Santa Barbara Humane has been using the Mobile Veterinary Clinic to perform spay/neuter surgeries. Last year, the clinic assisted Santa Barbara County Animal Services by addressing a backlog of unaltered animals, completing 226 surgeries.

In 2025, the service is being expanded, bringing free spay/neuter services directly to pet owners in the Santa Maria area to help reduce pet overpopulation and provide much-needed access to care.

“We’re thrilled to roll out our Mobile Veterinary Clinic and extend critical care to pets in remote, underserved areas,” said Dr. Katie Marrie, chief veterinary officer at Santa Barbara Humane. “For a limited time, we’re offering free spay/neuter surgeries to help more cats and dogs stay healthy and prevent overpopulation.

“While the free surgeries for all mobile unit clients won’t last forever, we will continue to offer low-cost and free spay/neuter options for pet owners in need.”

The Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic is currently available at the following locations:
● Jack O’Connell Park in Guadalupe
● Santa Barbara County Animal Services in Lompoc
● Santa Barbara County Animal Services in Santa Maria
● Hitching Post in Casmalia

Pet owners can view the schedule and sign up for appointments at sbhumane.org/mobile.

Thanks to donors, the spay/neuter services are offered free of charge, but this is a limited-time opportunity. Santa Barbara Humane advises pet owners to take advantage of the offer while it lasts.

Details of service:

● Age Restrictions: The mobile clinic cannot accept pets eight years or older for surgery, as they require pre-surgical bloodwork. These pets can still receive spay/neuter services at our Santa Barbara or Santa Maria stationary clinics.
● Weight Limit: The mobile clinic can accommodate dogs up to 60 pounds for spay/neuter surgeries. Larger dogs can receive these services at thr Santa Barbara or Santa Maria stationary clinics.
