Looking ahead to the winter storm season, the Montecito Association reports residents have raised concerns about the condition of creeks throughout Montecito.

Areas of concern mentioned by residents include sediment and debris buildup, clogged culverts and underpasses, eroding creek banks, and infrastructure that could be vulnerable during significant rainfall.

To address these issues, a community meeting will be held, 4:30-6 p.m. Sept. 14 at Montecito Union School. Attendees will discuss agency responsibilities, maintenance efforts, and winter preparedness.

Recent uncertainty has focused on the San Leandro Creek corridor, including the freeway underpass, which residents say has not been adequately cleared since the 2018 debris flow; and the San Leandro Lane Bridge, which carries important utility lines.

However, the broader concern is ensuring all of Montecito’s creeks, channels, culverts and crossings are adequately maintained and prepared before winter storms arrive, the Montecito Association said.

Representatives from the responsible agencies, as well as the offices of state and federal elected officials, have been invited to the meeting.
