Caltrans reopened more of Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast last week.
The southern closure moved 21 miles north from Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County to the Limekiln State Park area in Monterey County, according to Caltrans District 5. The new closure and turnaround point is just south of the park, which remains closed.
This stretch of highway reopening means travelers can access Salmon Creek, Willow Creek, Jade Cove, Plaskett Creek, Pacific Valley, Sand Dollar Beach, Kirk Creek and Treebones Resort from the south, in SLO County.
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and other popular Big Sur destinations are accessible from the north, on the Monterey County side. The state park is open for day use and camping.
Caltrans expects that a full reopening of the roadway won’t happen for at least several months.
There were several major landslides along the Big Sur coast section of Highway 1 in Monterey and SLO counties after back-to-back winter storms.
There’s no time estimate on when Caltrans will finish repairing and reopening the section with Paul’s Slide, located near Limekiln State Park, the San Luis Obispo Tribune reported.
The current road closure is from the south end of the Limekiln Creek bridge to the Big Creek Vista Point — about 6 miles.
