A Santa Barbara man is accused of murder in the death of a 3-year-old girl early this month, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.
Elvis Alberto Lopez, 24, was arrested Saturday in the death of his girlfriend’s daughter, said Lt. Kasi Corbett.
Police officers, city firefighters and an AMR ambulance responded at about 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 4 to a report that the toddler had fallen out of bed, injuring herself, Corbett said.
Emergency personnel performed CPR on the child before taking her to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
The child’s name was not released by police.
“Santa Barbara Police detectives with the assistance of Santa Barbara County Coroner’s office investigated the death,” Corbett said. “Based on the evidence gathered, the case was categorized as a homicide.”
On Saturday, an arrest warrant was obtained for Lopez, and he was later contacted at his family’s residence and taken into custody without incident, Corbett said.
He was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail, with bail set at $3 million, and remained in custody Tuesday night.
Charges were expected to be filed against Lopez on Wednesday in Superior Court in Santa Barbara, according to District Attorney John Savrnoch.
The Police Department is asking that anyone with information on this case contact the Detective Bureau at 805.897.2347.
