A motorcyclist died after colliding with an agricultural bus in Santa Maria on Wednesday morning.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., first responders were sent to the onramp to northbound Highway 101 at East Main Street and Nicholson Avenue, police Lt. Nathan Totorica said.

The motorcycle was traveling west on East Main Street, preparing to make a northbound turn onto the freeway.

A bus traveling northbound on Nicholson Avenue had a green light when the motorcycle, stopped at a red light, made a right turn without yielding prior to entering the intersection, Totorica said.

The motorcyclist failed to navigate the turn and collided with the passenger side of the bus, Totorica added.

The male motorcyclist sustained major injuries at the scene and was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.

The driver and passengers on the bus were uninjured.

Multiple converted buses, many painted white, carry farm workers to various sites around the North County.

Investigators do not believe drugs and/or alcohol were factors in the collision, Totorica added.

The name of the motorcyclist won’t be released until his family members have been notified.

The case remains under investigation by the SMPD Traffic Unit.

Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Officer Nickolas Barton of the Santa Maria Police Department Traffic Unit at 805.928.3781 extension 1358.
