The city of Carpinteria, in partnership with Carpinteria Beautiful and Relic Coastal Collaborative, has announced the opening of the Beach Cleanup Station Program at Ash Avenue.

There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 7 with city staff, local partners, and community members.

First proposed by a 14-year-old Carpinteria resident, the idea for the program reflects a growing interest among local youth and families in hands-on environmental stewardship, the city said.

The Beach Cleanup Station program introduces conveniently located stations designed so residents and visitors can take an active role in protecting Carpinteria’s coastline, the city said.

Each station is equipped with reusable baskets that make it easy to collect litter while enjoying the beach.

How it works:
• Grab a basket on your way to the beach.
• Collect litter during your visit.
• Empty the contents into a trash bin when you leave.
• Return the basket to the station.

The program aims to promote environmental stewardship, reduce marine debris, and preserve the natural beauty of Carpinteria’s beaches, the city said.

Data collected through a voluntary community survey will help the city and its partners better understand waste patterns and improve the program over time.

“Our coastline reflects the choices we make every day as a community, at home, in our businesses, and on our beaches,” said Tatianna Suriel, Environmental Program specialist with the city of Carpinteria. “This program makes it easy for anyone to take part in caring for our coastline.

“By making cleanup part of an everyday beach visit, we can all contribute, raise awareness, and rethink our daily actions to help protect our ocean.”

The program was inspired in part by similar efforts along the California coast, demonstrating a growing movement to engage local communities in hands-on environmental action.

Additional stations may be considered in the future based on program success and community feedback, the city said.
