The Santa Claus Lane Bikeway, a new Class I bikeway and multipurpose path, is open to pedestrians and bicyclists for the summer.

The new bike path opened on Friday, June 30, and will remain open through Labor Day weekend. Then it will be closed again so the permanent barrier rail can be installed.

The multipurpose path runs from Santa Claus Lane to Carpinteria Avenue, closing a gap in the California Coastal Trail between Sand Point Road and Carpinteria Avenue.

In addition to the new bike path, the project updated the intersection of Carpinteria Avenue and Estero Street with new crosswalks, signage, curbs and gutters.

A new teardrop-shaped vehicle turnaround was also built at the end of Santa Claus Lane, allowing vehicles to head west on the street.

The bikeway project is part of the larger Highway 101: Padaro project, which is improving pedestrian and bicyclist access on Padaro Lane and Santa Claus Lane, coastal access, and the South Padaro Lane undercrossing.
