A new campground is proposed at Prisoners Harbor on Santa Cruz Island in the Channel Islands National Park, and the public has an opportunity to provide input on the project until late June.
As presented in the general management plan, Channel Islands National Park is proposing to construct a new campground facility at Prisoners Harbor that will feature rustic campsites with a maximum capacity of 24 overnight visitors.

The plan incorporates suggestions from the public comment period that occurred in June and July last year. Modifications include the addition of an accessible campsite and restroom.
The project is still in the planning phase, Channel Islands National Park Chief Ranger Mark Hnat said Friday.
“A variety of compliance must still be completed prior to work beginning,” Hnat told Noozhawk. “Work could begin late summer of this year, and we anticipate three to six months to accomplish the project.”
The campground location is near the pier along a flat path and has shade, according to the proposal.
It’s about a quarter-mile from the Prisoners Harbor landing, and an area that was developed and heavily impacted by historic agricultural use, Hnat said.
The site “has limited visual impact on natural and cultural landscapes since it is off the main road and hidden by dense vegetation,” according to the project description.
The vegetation is dominated by non-native Mediterranean grasses, Hnat said.
The current project cost is estimated at $75,000, Hnat said.
People can offer their comments, concerns and suggestions to help guide the NPS in determining the proposal to construct a new campground at Prisoners Harbor.
The NPS is seeking public input related to the proposed campground design, as well as cultural and natural resources, and additional comments or questions.
The comment period closes on June 25.
