The name of the 21-year-old man who died days after being stabbed multiple times in Santa Maria has been released.

Steven Vargas of Nipomo received multiple injuries in the May 16 incident and died several days later, Lt. Andy Magallon of the Santa Maria Police Department Detective Bureau said Thursday.

At approximately 6:50 p.m. May 16, officers from the Santa Maria department were dispatched to the In-N-Out Burger in the 1300 block of South Bradley Road for a report of a stabbing victim, police said.

Vargas was located in a vehicle in the restaurant parking lot.

Officers determined the stabbing occurred in the 200 block of East Plaza Drive, several blocks west of the restaurant.

The victim was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center in critical condition, but hospital officials notified officers that the man had died, police said.

On May 17, Carlos Miguel Vazquez, 24, of Santa Maria was arrested in connection with the attack.

He initially was charged in Santa Barbara County Superior Court with attempted murder and sentencing enhancements for causing great bodily injury and use of deadly or dangerous weapon.

An amended complaint likely will be filed since the stabbing victim has died.

Vazquez remained in the custody of the Santa Barbara County Jail with bail set at $1 million.

Anybody with information about the incident is asked to contact Det. Erik Hesch at 805.928.3781, ext. 1349.
