Dos Pueblos flag football dropped the first game of CIF-SS Open Division pool play to No. 2 Newport Harbor by a score of 19-6 on a rainy Wednesday in Newport Beach.

The No. 11-ranked Chargers struggled throughout the game through tough conditions, with the team’s lone score coming on a punt return touchdown by Hazel Burgess.

After allowing 19 points in the opening half, the Dos Pueblos defense held the Sailors scoreless in the second half to keep the game close. However, Newport Harbor held strong down the stretch of the win.

Brooklyn Hedricks totaled 10 flag pulls for the Chargers, while Kindah Ahmad-Reda and Makyla Watt each recorded sacks in the solid defensive showing.

Dos Pueblos will have at least one more playoff game remaining, as they will round out pool play on Saturday at No. 7 Westlake. Kick-off is currently scheduled for 5 p.m.

Newport Harbor and Westlake will play next Wednesday, Oct. 28. If Newport Harbor comes out on top, it will advance to the Open Division Semifinals and eliminate Dos Pueblos, no matter the result of Saturday’s game.
