SANTA MARIA, Calif. – The No. 11 Santa Barbara City College Women’s Soccer team (10-4, 5-0) continued their Western State Conference (WSC) dominance, winning 5-1 at Allan Hancock (5-7-1, 2-3) on Tuesday afternoon. All five of the Vaqueros’ goals came from different goalscorers.
Less than five minutes into the game, the Vaqueros pounced on a Hancock turnover in a dangerous area. Ruby Kruse found the back of the net, courtesy of a Fiona Bulmer assist, to give Santa Barbara early control.
Control the match is exactly what they did. Neither team even mustered a shot until the 38th minute when Hancock failed to get a head on a Vaquero corner, and Elle Eichenberger hammered in the Vaqueros’ second goal. The half ended without a single shot from the hosts.
Out of the break, the momentum stayed wholly with Santa Barbara. In the end, they had eight shots in the second half alone, compared to Hancock’s three. But all of the damage came in an eight-minute span. Showcasing their depth of talent, three goals—with three different assisters—made it 5-0.
First, Olivia Del Castillo rippled the net with a Morgan Retterer assist in the 68th minute. In the 74th minute, Malia Misawa assisted center back Tindra Eckstein‘s second goal of the year. Less than two minutes later, the team’s leading scorer, Leilani Sanchez, scored the fifth with an assist from Kruse, the game’s first goalscorer.
Hancock avoided a shutout with a goal in the dying minutes. Ultimately, the Vaqueros made it five wins out of five as they hunt for a three-peat of WSC North titles.
Santa Barbara stays on the road as they travel to Oxnard (1-5-2, 0-4) on Friday at 4 p.m.
