San Marcos boys water polo scored a combined 25 goals across two games during day one of the Villa Park Classic on Thursday.

13-3 Win over Newbury Park

The Royals dominated their first matchup of the weekend against Newbury Park, cruising to the 10-point victory.

San Marcos jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, leading 6-1 at halftime and 11-1 after the third quarter before closing out the 13-3 win.

12-11 OT Win over St. Ignatius

The second game of the day was much more dramatic, as Will Stuart’s sudden death goal in overtime clinched the 12-11 win for the Royals.

The matchup was tightly contested throughout, with St. Ignatius leading 3-2 after the first quarter.

San Marcos then stormed back in the second quarter, outscoring their opponent 5-2 to take a 7-5 lead into halftime. The Royals held onto that lead throughout the third quarter, making it 10-8 heading into the final period of regulation.

With San Marcos up by one goal in the final minute, St. Ignatius came up clutch with a goal with just 22 seconds left on the clock, forcing the game into overtime.

Just a couple minutes into overtime, Stuart found the back of the cage for a game-clinching goal.

Luke Burns ended the day with five goals to lead the offensive effort while Nic Prentice contributed seven steals and six drawn exclusions. In the cage, Sam Rich totaled 19 blocks.
