Author Maggie Nelson will return to Santa Barbara Museum of Art’s (SBMA) Parallel Stories with a reading and discussion of “On Freedom: Four Songs of Care and Constraint,” 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 31 in Mary Craig Auditorium, 1130 State St.

A boundary-pushing, provocative work, “On Freedom” explores the notion of freedom through four lenses: art, sex, drugs, and the climate.

In this follow-up to her award-winning “The Argonauts,” Nelson continues to be “one of the most electrifying writers at work in America today, among the sharpest and most supple thinkers of her generation,” according to The Guardian.

Tickets are $5 for SBMA members, $10 non-members. Purchase tickets at tickets.sbma.net.

Those who attend an event in Mary Craig Auditorium must show proof of being fully vaccinated with a booster (if eligible); or, in some cases, supply a negative COVID-19 test result (taken within 72 hours prior to each event), along with an official photo ID, before entering the venue.

All visitors must also follow SBMA’s mask policy and wear a mask while attending events in the auditorium.
