A threatening post made to a TikTok account on Friday indicating an intent to carry out a shooting at Orcutt Academy High School is unfounded, and investigators identified the juvenile who posted it, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies began investigating Friday after school administrators reported to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office a “threatening post” made to TikTok — a popular social media app. The post indicated “a shooting would occur at the high school” on Monday, Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Raquel Zick said.

Deputies located the male Orcutt juvenile who posted it. They contacted him and his parents and determined that he “did not have the means to carry out the threat,” per Zick.

“The case will be forwarded to Santa Barbara County Juvenile Probation for consideration of criminal charges,” Zick said.

Additional information was not immediately available.

Zick said people who see social media posts that indicate a violent intent should report it to law enforcement or a school official.

“The Sheriff’s Office takes threats involving schools seriously and appreciates the administrators who promptly reported this post,” Zick said.

“We also want to remind students, parents, and community members that when they encounter threatening or suspicious content online, the best response is to report it, not repost it. Sharing or reposting a threat can spread fear, complicate an investigation, and amplify harmful content.”
