As rising costs, food insecurity, and the approaching winter storm season threaten vulnerable residents, Organic Soup Kitchen has initiated Fill the Bowls to bring 50 neighbors off its meal wait list.
“In Santa Barbara, 50 neighbors facing serious health challenges are already waiting for access to medically tailored meals through Organic Soup Kitchen,” the organization said.
Every morning, Organic Soup Kitchen’s program coordinator Ana answers calls from people asking whether they’ve moved up the meal waitlist.
“They call hoping there’s been a change, that we might have room for them,” she said. “It’s heartbreaking knowing how much these meals could mean and not being able to give them an answer.”
Organic Soup Kitchen prepares and delivers nutrient-dense, medically tailored soups to people facing cancer, chronic illness, and other serious health challenges.
For those navigating medical treatments, limited mobility, or financial hardship, access to consistent, nourishing meals can be essential to maintaining health and independence, Organic Soup Kitchen said.
With demand outpacing funding, the organization is calling on the Santa Barbara community to help ensure that no neighbor is left waiting.
The Fill the Bowls campaign has one goal: bring every person on the wait list to the table. Fifty empty bowls each represent one neighbor waiting for meals.
As donations come in, bowls will be filled, with a weekly countdown showing the community’s progress toward eliminating the wait list.
• $72 provides one week of meals for one neighbor.
• $288 fills a bowl: one month of meals for one person on the waitlist.
• $14,400 per month provides meals for all 50 people currently waiting.
“Fifty bowls is a goal this community can meet,” said Anthony Carroccio, executive director and founder. “Every one we fill is a neighbor who stops waiting.”
As winter approaches, Organic Soup Kitchen said it hopes to strengthen the community’s safety net before severe weather creates additional barriers for those already struggling.
“The campaign reflects a simple belief: access to nourishing food should not be a privilege, especially for those facing serious illness,” the organization said.
