An investigation was under way Saturday afternoon after the discovery of a body outside a closed fast-food restaurant in Santa Maria.

At approximately 12:45 p.m., Santa Maria police and firefighters were dispatched to the 2300 block of Broadway, the site of the now-closed Arby’s

Santa Maria police crime scene technicians and Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputies also responded to the scene.

A black barrier and law enforcement vehicles helped shield the remains from passing motorists on Broadway as the investigation continued on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant.

The incident reportedly was being investigated as a suspected overdose, police said.

The official cause of death was pending autopsy and toxicology results by the sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau.

The identity of the dead individual was being withheld pending notification of relatives.

The Arby’s closed earlier this month.
