One person was airlifted to the hospital Saturday afternoon after a single-vehicle crash on Highway 101 at Gaviota, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Firefighters and other emergency personnel were dispatched shortly after 3:30 p.m. to the crash in the southbound lanes near the Gaviota Rest Area.

The SUV veered into the hillside and overturned, coming to rest on its side just north of the rest area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A patient with moderate injuries was taken by ground ambulance to nearby Fire Station 38, where it was met by a county helicopter, which transported them to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

The patient’s name and details on their injuries were not available.

No other injuries were reported, fire Capt. Mike Gray said.

The right-hand lane was shut down for a time, according to the CHP, which was investigating the crash.
