PCPA will present “Songs for Nobodies” by Joanna Murray-Smith, with orchestrations by Andra Velis Simon, Aug. 14-23 at the Marian Theatre in Santa Maria, and Aug. 28-Sept. 7 at Solvang Festival Theater.

The one-woman show stars award-winning actor/singer Bethany Thomas, featuring songs by Judy Garland, Patsy Cline, Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday, and Maria Callas.

In the world of “Songs for Nobodies,” the paths of some of the most legendary singers of all time intersect with those of everyday women in show of inspiration and resilience.

Thomas takes audiences on a journey of discovery through songs like “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “Crazy,” “Amazing Grace,” “Ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do,” and “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien.”

“Looking at the title of this piece, there’s an implication that this world is made up of Nobodies and Somebodies,” said director Rob Lindley. “Five ‘ordinary’ women (the Nobodies) whose lives have been changed by five legendary singers.

“Through small encounters and chance meetings they learn they are made of the same stuff.  And we learn that the bathroom attendant, the spotlight operator, the librarian, the reporter, the nanny are just as important as the superstars that enter their lives.”

The creative team includes Lindley, music director Jake Cannon, scenic designer Jeffrey Kmiec, costume designer Juliette Lunger, lighting designer Cody Soper, sound designer Jon Zielke, properties director Mel Heesom-Green, voice and dialect coach Will Kinnon, and stage manager Jack D. Myles.

Thomas will be accompanied on stage by Jake Cannon on the keyboard and conductor, Evan Goldhahn on percussion, Nancy Nagano and Ben Williams on the cello.
