Indivisible Santa Barbara invites the community to participate in a peaceful rally to celebrate the democratic process and the right to vote, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, July 18 at the Dolphin Fountain at Stearns Wharf.
Local participants will be joining millions of Americans demonstrating across the country, organizers said.
Ralliers will gather on the sidewalk on both sides of the Dolphin Fountain, then spread out along the sidewalk “to demonstrate support for democracy, the right to vote and the memory of a true hero of democracy [John Lewis],” organizers said.
“We celebrate the spirit of John Lewis, who peacefully protested on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and in the halls of Congress to preserve the sanctity of the process so that every citizen, regardless of race, could avail themselves in participating in the greatest experiment in government, of the people, by the people and for the people,” Indivisible SB organizers said.
“The Trump administration’s intention to interfere is well known. The efforts have already begun, but the constitution is being upheld by judges in courts across the country,” organizers said. “We as citizens need to step up and rally for the right to vote and to know our rights when it comes to the election.”
“The attacks by ICE and the stationing of National Guard troops in cities around the country are mere prologue to Trump’s intent to intimidate people and try to steal votes and ballots to rig the election,” said Ian Paige, a member of Indivisible Santa Barbara’s steering committee.
“We the people must, in the spirit of ‘making good trouble,’ show up, speak up, and let everyone know we will not just sit back and watch the vote and elections be grifted away by a wanna-be dictator.” he said.
Participants should bring, if possible, signs expressing support for “Making Good Trouble;” the right to vote; and for free and fair elections.
All Indivisible Santa Barbara events adhere to the spirit of nonviolent protest and community safety. Organizers are trained in de-escalation and are working closely with local partners to ensure a peaceful and powerful rally, the group said.
Indivisible Santa Barbara is a nonprofit based in Santa Barbara that is part of the nationwide Indivisible movement.
