A pedestrian was fatally injured Friday night when she was struck by a vehicle on Mission Street near Highway 101 in Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.
Firefighters, city police and other emergency personnel were dispatched shortly after 10 p.m. to the incident — reportedly a hit and run — at the northbound freeway on-ramp.
The victim — a 23-year-old woman — suffered critical injuries, and was taken by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, fire Battalion Chief Cory Cloud told Noozhawk.
When firefighters arrived, the woman was down in the roadway not breathing and without a pulse, Cloud said.
The victim, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was declared dead at the hospital, Cloud added.
The vehicle involved reportedly was a white Mercedes, but that could not be confirmed.
Roughly a dozen Santa Barbara Police Department and California Highway Patrol units were still on scene as of 11 p.m.
The northbound Mission Street on-ramp and off-ramp were shut down for a time after the collision.
Additional details were not immediately available.
