A teenage girl was struck by a train and killed on Monday near Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies and other emergency personnel were dispatched at about 9 a.m. to the railroad tracks in the area of the 4500 block of Hollister Avenue, near the former Juvenile Hall, said Raquel Zick, sheriff’s public information officer.

Zick said she did not know whether an Amtrak passenger train or a freight train was involved in the incident, although a witness told Noozhawk it was an Amtrak train.

Personnel from the sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau responded to the scene and were conducting an investigation.

The 16-year-old victim’s name was not released pending notification of relatives, Zick said.

The tracks were shut down to train traffic for several hours during the emergency response and investigation Monday morning.
