A pedestrian was critically injured Tuesday evening when he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Hollister Avenue near Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Firefighters and other emergency personnel were dispatched shortly after 6 p.m. to the incident on Hollister Avenue at Auhay Drive, fire Capt. Scott Safechuck told Noozhawk.

A 68-year-old man was in the crosswalk, headed north, when he was struck by an eastbound Oldsmobile sedan driven by Florentino V. Lopez, 78, of Santa Barbara, according to Officer Jonathan Gutierrez of the California Highway Patrol.

The man was transported by American Medical Response ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with major injuries.

Gutierrez identified him Thursday afternoon as Timothy Raymond Hain of Santa Barbara, but details on his condition were not available.

Lopez was not hurt in the collision, Gutierrez said.

Hollister Avenue was shut down in the area for about three hours after the collision, which was under investigation by the CHP.
