A pedestrian was struck by an Amtrak train and fatally injured late Monday near Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. in the area north of Encore Drive, off Modoc Road, about a quarter-mile east of Hollister Avenue, according to the PulsePoint app.
The train, a northbound Pacific Surfliner, was stopped in the area for what Amtrak in a tweet termed a “trespasser incident.”
The pedestrian, who appeared to be in his early 20s, was declared dead at the scene, fire Engineer Mike Gray told Noozhawk.
Personnel from the county Coroner’s Bureau were responding, he added.
The man’s identity was not released pending notification of relatives.
