A pedestrian was killed Tuesday night when he was struck by one or more vehicles on Highway 101 in Santa Barbara, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident was reported shortly before 6 p.m. in the southbound freeway lanes between the Milpas Street offramp and onramp, according to Capt. Kevin Hokom of the Santa Barbara City Fire Department.

An adult male was declared dead at the scene from “massive injuries,” Hokom told Noozhawk.

“I believe he was hit by multiple vehicles,” Hokom said, adding that it had not been confirmed by investigators.

Personnel from the Santa Barbara County Coroner’s Bureau were dispatched to the scene to pick up the man’s remains.

The southbound freeway lanes were shut down for a time while officers investigated, and Caltrans advised that motorists should expect major delays, and use Cabrillo Boulevard as a detour.

The incident was under investigation by the CHP.
