Peoples’ Self-Help Housing (PSHH) this month saw the retirement of senior project manager Mark Wilson, a pioneer of the working-from-home model and dedicated employee who has provided support and service to the organization for more than 28 years.

“Our veteran team member is now heading to a richly deserved retirement, but as is so characteristic of Mark, he will only be down tooling for a short period,” says PSHH president/CEO John Fowler. “After a well-earned summer off, in the fall he will take on a new role with us as a consultant.

“Although only working part-time so he can enjoy more of his beloved outdoor pursuits, knowing Mark, he will still be fully committed to the building of affordable homes.”

Wilson, a California native, keen athlete, and Certified Public Accountant, started his career in San Francisco and on joining PSHH in 1991, worked initially in rental and commercial real estate operations. He guided the organization as one of the first users of state and federal low-income housing tax credits (LITHC), and helped to establish the Multi-Family Housing Development Department.

Over his career, he has handled the syndication and placements for 17 tax-credit developments, and his knowledge and expertise enabled PSHH to use nonprofit bond financing programs.

A little over a decade ago, Wilson began telecommuting from British Columbia in Canada, but still carried a full portfolio of projects, returning quarterly to personally connect and to visit his active job sites. Despite his retirement, Wilson’s  legacy will live on thanks to his almost three decades of commitment and dedication, in the 5,000 people a day who call a PSHH house, home.

Founded in 1970, PSHH is the longest-serving nonprofit housing organization on the Central Coast. With a mission to build affordable homes with site-based services that offer opportunities to change lives and strengthen communities, PSHH serves low-income households, working families, seniors, veterans, those living with disabilities and the formerly homeless

It also provides homeownership opportunities through a self-help, sweat equity program that has seen some 1,200 homes completed. PSHH has a presence in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Monterey and Ventura counties, manages nearly 2,000 rental units, and employs 200 staff members.
