One person died Saturday morning in an incident that initially appeared to be a vehicle that had crashed into the lagoon on the UCSB campus.

At about 4 a.m., members of the UC Santa Barbara Police Department, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies were notified about a car near the lagoon.

Police tape surrounded the scene as law enforcement officers investigated the incident involving a silver sedan off the road and at the edge of the lagoon.

Santa Barbara County firefighters attempted lifesaving measures, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Santa Barbara County Fire Department spokesman Mike Eliason said.

Law enforcement officers remained at the scene into Saturday afternoon investigating the death of the victim.

The indiviual does not appear to be affiliated with the university, UCSB spokeswoman Shelly Leachman said, adding that there is no ongoing threat to the campus community.

UCSB Police were leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death, Leachman added.

The victim’s name, age and hometown will be released after family members have been notified of the death.
