The game of mah-jongg is played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters.

The Friends of the Santa Barbara Library will be hosting a non-competitive mah-jongg fundraiser, 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15 in the Main Library’s Faulkner Gallery, 40 E. Anapamu St.

The event is designed for those who enjoy playing mah-jongg but don’t like the pressure of a tournament. Participants can play with their regular group or meet other players. Beginners are welcome, but they should know how to play the game.

A donation of $40 will be used to support Santa Barbara Library programs and to purchase new books.

A reception will be provided with a selection of savory and sweet treats, wine, and other beverages. As in previous years, there will also be a drawing with an array of items including homemade baked goods, and a set of wooden double racks.

Register in advance by making your $40 donation here and writing “Mah Jongg Event” in the comments box.

Attendees are asked to bring a set and racks if possible, and a favorite mat to play on.
