A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in Santa Barbara in connection with a weekend double shooting that left one man dead and another injured in Santa Maria.

At approximately 10:15 p.m. Saturday, Santa Maria police officers and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the 400 block of North Benwiley Street after receiving a report of a shooting, police Lt. Daniel Rios said on Sunday. 

Officers discovered that a shooting had taken place outside a residence where a large party was being held.

Two men suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Miguel Pablo-Morelos, 27, died at the hospital despite lifesaving measures, Rios said Wednesday.

The second victim, a 19-year-old male, received non-life-threatening injuries. 

Investigators identified the alleged shooter as a 17-year-old Santa Maria resident and known gang member.

Police tracked the suspect to the Santa Barbara area while also obtaining an arrest warrant for murder, and associated search warrants.

Late Tuesday and early Wednesday Santa Maria police detectives, with assistance from investigators of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office and the Santa Barbara Police Department, conducted a warrant service operation in the 500 block of East Ortega Street in Santa Barbara, Rios added.

In addition to arresting the 17-year-old suspect, a 16-year-old male and associate of the shooter who lived at the Ortega residence also was arrested on an unrelated and outstanding felony juvenile probation warrant, Rios said. 

Both were transported and booked into the Santa Maria Juvenile Hall. Their names weren’t released due to their ages.
