Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 40-year-old Santa Barbara man Saturday afternoon after a domestic disturbance at an Eastern Goleta Valley apartment complex led to a standoff at a nearby equestrian center.
The man, identified by a Sheriff’s Office spokesperson as Maurilio Carriedo, was booked at the Santa Barbara County Main Jail.
Sheriff’s spokesperson Raquel Zick said exact charges and bail information will be available at a later time.
Deputies first responded to a report of a domestic dispute at an apartment complex on the 4400 block of Hollister Avenue at around 11:34 a.m., according to Zick.
Deputies found a man in the area who was “armed with a knife,” Zick said. “The subject was uncooperative with deputies and fled to a horse corral in the nearby equestrian center, where he waved the knife and refused to surrender.”
She did not specify which equestrian center.
Zick said crisis negotiators, nearby law enforcement agencies and a K9 team were called to the scene.
The suspect surrendered himself at around 12:29 p.m., she said.
Deputies closed off parts of the Modoc Multi-Use Path during the standoff, per emergency radio traffic.
Carriedo was previously arrested after a standoff with law enforcement last April.
Police were called to the same block of Hollister Avenue at around 8:30 a.m. in April 2025 for a report of a domestic dispute.
In that incident, Carriedo fled to his residence on the 300 block of Stevens Road, where deputies spent two hours “discouraging him from escalating the situation and encouraging him to surrender peacefully,” officials said at the time.
Deputies eventually “forced entry to the residence and deployed pepperball irritant to the interior of the residence” and took Carriedo into custody.
He had three outstanding warrants for his arrest at the time for felony domestic violence, contempt of court, providing false information to a peace officer, possession of a dirt or dagger, possession of a controlled substance, and assault with great bodily injury.
Superior Court records show he was sentenced in August 2025 for inflicting corporal injury on a spouse/cohabitant, having a prior corporal injury conviction within seven years, and contempt of court.
He was sentenced to one year in jail, with a credit of 145 days of time served.
His sentence also included three years of probation, which is set to end on Aug. 18, 2028.
Superior Court records show he has been separately arrested and charged with numerous drug-related and domestic-violence-related felonies and misdemeanors stretching back to 2003.
