The Santa Barbara Police Department is investigating a suspicious death after a body was found in an apartment in Santa Barbara’s West Beach neighborhood Wednesday morning.

Police first responded at around 9:37 p.m. Tuesday for a welfare check in a home on the 100 block of Los Aguajes Avenue, according to Lt. Ryan DeJohn.

DeJohn said officers contacted a resident and “identified suspicious circumstances that prompted further investigation.”

They served a search warrant on the residence Wednesday morning at around 6:45 a.m. and found a “deceased individual inside the residence,” per DeJohn.

“The circumstances surrounding the death are considered suspicious, and the Santa Barbara Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit is leading the investigation,” he said.

He said the investigation remained ongoing as of Wedneday morning.
