Emergency personnel were dispatched Sunday afternoon to a report of a possible drowning in the Red Rock area of Los Padres National Forest.
A man in his 30s reportedly went missing in a pool about a half-mile from the Red Rock Day Use Area, according to Santa Barbara County fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli.
County firefighters responded at about 2:40 p.m. to the incident, along with sheriff’s deputies, the sheriff’s Search & Rescue Team and U.S. Forest Service personnel.
The Red Rock area is a popular weekend retreat for people who come to swim in the pools along the upper Santa Ynez River.
After a search, the man was found in the water, Bertucelli said, and efforts were made to revive him.
However, the victim was declared dead at the scene, sheriff’s spokeswoman Raquel Zick told Noozhawk.
The dead man’s identity was withheld pending notification of relatives.
