Dos Pueblos lost a pitchers’ duel Friday, falling 1-0 to Rio Mesa in Channel League action.
Joe Talarico started on the mound and pitched five shutout innings, striking out two batters. Kyle Spink pitched one inning and struck out one batter.
Mateo Calene had a triple, while Talarico and Zach Gesswein added singles.
Dos Pueblos and Rio Mesa now both have 5-5 league records. The Chargers are 12-10 overall.
Hueneme 5, Carpinteria 3
Hueneme and Carpinteria played the rubber game of their season Citrus Coast League series, with the Vikings coming out on top 5-3.
The Hueneme pitching staff and defense held the Warriors to just one hit while taking advantage of five Warrior miscues.
Freshman right-hander Gabe Martinez was on the mound for Carpinteria, and threw a very competitive complete game. But the effort was not quite enough as he scattered five hits, walked three, struck out three and surrendered just two earned runs.
Erich Goebel got the Warrior hit and he later scored and drove in a run. Diego Nieves walked twice, had an RBI and scored a run.
“At times, baseball can be really frustrating,” Carpinteria Pat Cooney said. “The battery of Martinez and Nieves did a great job, but the defense made some mistakes and our offense blistered some balls right at the Viking defenders.
“It was still encouraging to see our players claw their way back into the game. We got down 4-0 and could have mailed it in, but they produced some nice runs and applied pressure.”
The Warriors, 7-7 overall and 6-7 in the CCL, play at Channel Islands in the final make-up game currently on the 2023 schedule. For the third consecutive week, they play three Citrus Coast League games as they finish the week with two against the Malibu Sharks.
