Carpinteria High girls basketball came out on top in a defensive battle against rival Cate by a score of 44-25 on Saturday in Carpinteria.
“Our full court pressure created turnovers and ineffective offense,” Warrior head coach Henry Gonzales said. “We were able to transition on offense, which led to good scoring opportunities.
“I was happy with our approach; we had a good mindset and played with good energy and focus.”
Carpinteria dominated the opening half, holding the Rams to just seven points and racing out to a 26-7 lead by halftime. The Warriors maintained a strong lead throughout the second half en route to the win.
Charlotte Cooney dropped a game-high 22 points in the victory, while Jamaica Cook recorded a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Carpinteria (9-5, 3-1 CCL) will host Fillmore on Monday.
Dos Pueblos 57, Pacifica 31
A standout defensive effort powered the Chargers to a victory over the Tritons on Saturday inside Sovine Gym in Goleta.
The Dos Pueblos defense set the tone early, holding the Tritons to just five points in the opening quarter. However, Dos Pueblos managed just 10 points of its own to take a slim lead into the second.
Dos Pueblos slowly pulled away from there, holding a nine-point lead at halftime and growing it out to a 15-point advantage with one quarter to play before earning the win.
Carly Letendre poured in a game-high 16 points to go along with 17 rebounds, while Kindah Ahmad-Reda ended the day with 14 points and 13 rebounds of her own.
The Chargers (10-10, 4-2 Channel League) will host Buena on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
San Marcos 54, Buena 38
The Royals got out to a fast start and rode that to a league victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday in Ventura.
San Marcos rattled off 10 straight points to begin the game and held a strong 18-9 lead at the end of the first. Buena found more of a groove as the game wore on, but the Royals pulled away for the win in the fourth quarter.
“Our ability to run the floor was the difference in the game. We had 21 points in transition,” San Marcos head coach Devin Uyesaka said.
Jada Ahmad turned in a strong performance on both ends of the court, including leading the team with 21 points. Lily Ruvalcaba, Izzy Schow and Amelyse Wong all scored eight points.
The Royals (10-5, 4-2 Channel League) will head across town to take on rival Santa Barbara High on Thursday at 7 p.m.
Ventura 79, Santa Barbara High 14
The Dons struggled to keep up with the Cougars in a league loss on Saturday at J.R. Richards Gym.
Santa Barbara High was led by seven points and 10 rebounds from Shea Gannon.
“Shea once again let us in rebounding. She’s becoming a force on the defensive boards,” Santa Barbara High head coach Andrew Butcher said. “Kendall Dowdy continues to improve at both ends of the floor, so that’s encouraging.”
The Dons will host Royal High on Monday at 6 p.m. for a non-league matchup.
Boys Basketball
Bishop Diego boys basketball pulled away in the second half to earn a 69-41 victory over Thacher on Saturday in Ojai.
The Cardinals held just a 30-24 lead at halftime, but they came out of the break on fire and dominated the final two quarters en route to the 28-point win.
“Everyone was flying on defense and playing very hard tonight,” Bishop Diego head coach Caleb Richey said. “Thacher did a great job tonight but our guys kept fighting and I was very proud of how we came out in the second half.”
Damien Krautmann and Crew Sjovold led the charge on the offensive end by scoring 18 and 17 points, respectively.
Capistrano Valley 80, Dunn 61
The Earwigs fell behind in the first quarter and couldn’t recover in a loss to Capistrano Valley on Saturday.
Dylan Shomes shined on the offensive end despite the loss, erupting for 31 points. Meanwhile, Walker Vazquez collected 23 points and 13 assists while running the offense.
