Bishop Diego boys volleyball kicked off Tri-Valley League play with a 3-0 road sweep of Foothill Tech on Thursday, 25-20, 25-16, 25-18.
“Every player made an impact and played with great intensity today,” Cardinals student managers Dominic Herrera and Carlo Moreno said. “It’s a great way to start league play with a strong win.”
John Michael Flint was all over the court in the win, collecting 21 kills, nine digs and two aces. Meanwhile, Nick Malesky tallied 11 kills and two aces.
Will Neubauer facilitated the offense with 39 kills while Isaiah Kitt led the defense with four blocks.
Bishop Diego (2-0) will take on Nordhoff and Fillmore at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., respectively, on Saturday in the Brick House.
Dos Pueblos 3, Valencia 2
The Chargers outlasted Valencia for a five-set win on Thursday inside Sovine Gym, 25-10, 18-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-9.
“I’m proud of the team tonight,” Dos Pueblos head coach Ehren Hug said. “They dealt with a little adversity and plays not going their way, but they dug themselves out mentally and kept challenging the opponent.
“We passed great again tonight and at one point we just had to settle down and enjoy each point. It’s encouraging to see them battle through a five-setter this early in the season.”
After the Chargers dominated the opening set, Valencia punched back with back-to-back set wins to put them on the ropes.
However, Dos Pueblos continued to fight and picked up two straight sets of its own to earn the victory.
Kawin Ramko was a monster on the outside and ended with 18 kills while Noah Grant tallied 13 kills from the middle blocker position.
Wyatt Silver was in the middle of the action with 43 assists while Enzo DeMatteo collected eight digs against a strong Valencia attack.
“Enzo has played well the last few days,” Hug said. “He’s anticipating shots and passing with great efficiency. We are very excited for this junior season of his.”
The Chargers (2-0) will be on the road against Arroyo Grande on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Providence 3, Fillmore 0
The Patriots picked up a season-opening sweep of Fillmore on Thursday, 25-18, 25-11, 25-20.
“I’m really excited about what I saw out there today,” Providence head coach Dan Terry said. “We have a deeper team than last year and everyone on and off the bench contributed a lot to the match today.
After taking the first two sets, Providence fell behind 18-10 in the third. However, the Patriots came roaring back and finished the set on a 15-2 run to cap off the victory.
Jordan LaBrie led the team with 15 kills while Sam Oliynyk hammered home 10 kills and Cor Patterson served up five aces.
“I was especially impressed with our middles Mick Falconer and Sam Oliynyk, who both played their first indoor match today and were able to jump right into a fast tempo offense running quick attacks,” Terry said.
The Patriots will take on Midland in their league opener on the road on Wednesday.
