Santa Barbara High boys volleyball won its third straight match to begin Channel League play with a sweep of Rio Mesa on Thursday inside J.R. Richards Gym.

The Dons (5-3, 3-0 Channel League) dominated the opening set and never looked back en route to the win, 25-15, 25-20, 25-14.

The duo of Kristian Dybdahl and Reid Miller led an explosive Santa Barbara High attack with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

Maddox Denver of the Dons facilitated the offense with 28 assists, and Blake Lee pitched in four kills from the middle.

Santa Barbara High will compete in the Dos Pueblos Invitational on Saturday at the Thunderdome.

Carpinteria High 3, Channel Islands 1

The Warriors bounced back from a first-set loss to defeat Channel Islands in four sets on Thursday, 25-27, 25-17, 25-23, 25-15.

“The team stayed united and competed hard the entire night against a strong Channel Islands squad,” Carpinteria High head coach Favian Muralles said.  “It was an exciting match with both teams battling hard for every point. After dropping the first set in a close finish, we regrouped and adapted, taking the next three sets with strong energy and teamwork.”

Cole Rowbottom of the Warriors had his best offensive night of the season with 15 kills. Meanwhile, Alan Maya contributed 20 assists and five kills.

Kevin Bernal (25 digs), Rafael Cintura (21 digs) and Rockston Cavalli (19 digs) led the Carpinteria High defense.

The Warriors also got a key performance from Jesus “Chuy” Reyes, who had 15 assists, four aces and a nine-point serving run to close out the fourth and final set.

Carpinteria High (5-2, 2-1 Citrus Coast League) will be on the road against Nordhoff on Tuesday.

Bishop Diego 3, Del Sol 2

The Cardinals went on the road and earned a gritty five-set win over the Jaguars on Thursday in Oxnard, 19-25, 25-21, 26-24, 23-25, 15-7.

Bishop Diego is now 7-1 overall and 3-0 against Tri-Valley League opponents heading into the Dos Pueblos Invitational at the Thunderdome at UCSB.

“Long before this season started, we knew we were going to have weeks where we would need to rely on guys to come in off the bench to contribute,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said. “Tonight, we got to have the guys who didn’t play much against Santa Ynez on Tuesday play the whole time against a scrappy Del Sol team.

“While we struggled at times, I still believe the guys who played tonight earned the right to play in this match, which earned them valuable match experience and got the guys we’re going to rely on in the DPI Saturday the opportunity to rest. I’m proud of our effort tonight, and I think everyone got better.”

Nico DeRosa (18 kills, 12 digs) and Luca Moreno-Murphy (17 kills, 10 digs) each recorded double-doubles for the Cardinals, while Tua Rojas had 12 kills and Mikey Gomez ended with 12 digs.

Bishop Diego will take on Royal, San Luis Obispo and Saugus in the Dos Pueblos Invitational on Saturday.
