Cate girls basketball outlasted Carpinteria High by a score of 40-31 in a non-league matchup on Friday.

“The most significant factor in the win was our relentless defense,” Rams head coach Laura Moore said. “Cate’s trapping defense shut down the Warriors’ offense and took away their rhythm, especially in the second half. Offensively, our success stemmed from a balanced offensive attack.”

The Warriors started the game with the advantage, taking a 10-8 lead after the first quarter. However, Cate held the Carpinteria offense in check in the middle quarters to stay in the game.

The Rams then took over in the fourth quarter, pouring on 20 points and holding the Warriors to 10 to earn the nine-point win.

Sam Jimenez led Cate with a team-high 14 points while Sophia Ospina tallied 10 points and Lilli Whelan and Josie Song tallied six points apiece.

As for Carpinteria, Jamaica Cook put up 17 points and nine rebounds while Charlotte Cooney ended the day with 11 points and five assists.

“I was happy with our defensive performance overall,” Warriors head coach Henry Gonzales said. “We will continue to work and move forward to gain a playoff spot.

The Rams will take on Bishop Diego on Tuesday at 6 p.m. inside the Brick House. Meanwhile, Carpinteria will be on the road against Nordhoff on Tuesday.

The two teams then went back and forth until the Cardinals held a one-point lead with 15 seconds to go. However, Coastal Christian responded with a three-pointer in transition to regain the advantage.

Bishop Diego pushed the ball up the court for the last-second shot but it didn’t fall, resulting in the loss.

Jeisa Coronado poured in 26 points for the Cardinals while Alyssa Chrestenson ended the night with 19.

Bishop Diego (5-14) will host Cate on Tuesday at 6 p.m. inside the Brick House.
