Local girls golf squads were in action on Tuesday, as the Santa Ynez Pirates competed in their first tournament of the year while the Santa Barbara Dons faced off against Oxnard High.

Santa Ynez High @ Rancho Maria Golf Course

The Pirates placed fifth out of eight teams in the first Mountain League tournament of the season in Santa Maria on Tuesday.

Mackenzie Phelan was the low scorer for the Pirates with a mark of 84, while Gigi Gunasayan of Arroyo Grande finished as the medalist of the tournament with a 75.

As a team, Santa Ynez had a total score of 529 while first-place Arroyo Grande ended at 426.

The other Pirates that competed on Tuesday were Sierra Freedman (99), Addison West (107), Kacy Caplan (118), Katherine Becerra (121) and Savannah Hudley (121).

Santa Barbara @ River Ridge Golf Course

The Dons took down Oxnard High on Tuesday at River Ridge Golf Course, a par-35 course, ending with a team score of 244 compared to Oxnard’s 313.

Santa Barbara High’s Sage Malmsten, a sophomore, was the medalist on the day, ending with a score of 46. Right behind Malmsten were Jasmine Zukor and Ava Karman, who finished one stroke behind at 47.

“[Malmsten] parred holes four and five to medalist for the first time,” Dons coach Ryan Throop said. “Her swing has really improved since last year and was driving the ball well today in the heat.”

Rounding out the Dons were Savannah Delesalle (50), Ashley Lemons (54) and Jayna Malmsten (58).

Santa Barbara High (1-0) will take on Carpinteria High on Thursday at Saticoy Regional Golf Course.
