Carpinteria High girls soccer defended its home pitch with a 10-0 rout of Bishop Diego on Friday night in Carpinteria.
“Carpinteria has talent all over the field and are well coached,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said. “We hope to get to a place with our program where they are in the future.”
The Warriors dominated the opening half, rattling off nine unanswered goals to take a 9-0 lead into halftime.
Evelyn Lara poured in four goals in a game where four different players scored for Carpinteria. Vicky Martinez also played a strong game in the midfield, while Belen MacMuray made an impact defensively.
The Cardinals continued to battle in the second half, holding Carpinteria to just one goal to bring the game to its final score of 10-0.
“Lindsay Doyle came in and played great as our goalie, and overall, the energy didn’t change despite falling into such a deep hole,” Bennett said. “Kaitlyn Garcia continues to be a force on defense, and Addisyn Galvez did a nice job in the midfield.
“The Hubbs duo of Haley and Abbie work so hard for us and continue to stop the ball in precarious spots that would likely have been good opportunities for the opponent to score. We’re getting better, and we’re looking forward to another full week next week.”
The Warriors (4-0) will be on the road against Orcutt Academy on Monday.
San Marcos 1, Calabasas 0
The Royals gritted out a 1-0 road victory over Calabasas on Friday.
“It was a special win against a team that we hadn’t beaten in a while,” San Marcos head coach Miguel Vences said. “We’ve struggled in the past due to their team’s athleticism and they really force you to play at your best for 80 minutes.
“It was a game where you see the entire team taking that next step in their game. They hit a different gear that we knew we had, but to see it play out was special. The hunger, desire, the combination play, and the ability to manage the game were all there.”
Zeina Matni scored the lone goal of the night on a shot from outside the box to clinch the victory.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Harlyn Griffin anchored a strong defensive effort that also featured Stephanie Carranza, Lulu Aurell, Sofia Turenchalk and Susie Leon.
Santa Barbara High 1, Del Sol 1
The Dons battled to a draw with Del Sol of Oxnard on Friday at Peabody Stadium.
“We are really proud of the players tonight for the effort they put in on the defensive side of the ball,” Santa Barbara High coach Marco Medina said. “We slowed down and forced turnovers from Del Sol’s top two players, who are very talented on the ball.”
Santa Barbara came out firing and scored in the fourth minute when Madeline Hashbarger collected a pass from Ginger Winckler and fired a low shot past the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.
After some back-and-forth play, Del Sol earned a penalty in the box and buried the shot to tie the game up at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The two sides continued to exchange momentum swings in the second half, but neither could break through and the game ended in a draw.
“Our center backs, Sofia Lopez and Lena Fackler, were composed when playing out of the back yet aggressive when challenging balls in the air,” Medina said. “We limited their shots on frame, and when needed, our goalkeeper Alice Sweeney made crucial stops.
“Everyone has a role on the field and tonight was teamwork in action. Also, kudos to the two Maddies, Madeline Hashbarger for getting the early goal and Madeleine Savellano for her strong presence in midfield.”
Santa Barbara High (1-1-2) will host San Marcos on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. for the Channel League opener.
