The high school girls tennis season opened up on Thursday, with Carpinteria taking on Viewpoint and Dos Pueblos facing off against Santa Ynez.
Carpinteria 10, Viewpoint 8
Carpinteria High opened up its season with a 10-8 win over Viewpoint High on Thursday.
“It was a very close and fun match,” Warriors coach Charles Bryant said. “Overall, I was quite happy with [the team’s] performances.”
In doubles play, the duo of Charlotte Cooney and Allison Banks swept their matchup, showing potential as a new painting, according to Bryant.
Sasha Porinsh and Clover Martinez had a close matchup on their court, pulling out the clinching 10th point in a back-and-fourth third set to win 2-1.
In singles, Carpinteria’s Silke Leonard went 2-1, beating Viewpoint’s top player but falling to the No. 2 in the third round.
The Warriors benefited from defaults by Viewpoint due to a shortage of players. After securing the victory, Bryant was encouraged by what he saw.
“The improvement and confidence from the first set to the second set was incredible,” Bryant said. “They settled in and started to play very well… That was a good feeling all around.”
Carpinteria is now 1-0 and will match up with Laguna Blanca on Friday.
Dos Pueblos 12, Santa Ynez 6
The Chargers and Pirates faced off on Thursday, with Dos Pueblos coming out on top.
Doubles play was competitive, with Santa Ynez winning 2-1 on two of the three courts. The Pirate duo of Paige Halme and Kate Mazza won two of its matchups while Danielle Hyland and Grace Sugich got the job done as well.
The Charger pairing of Eva Amendad and Isla Herrera went unbeaten in doubles play.
Singles play, meanwhile, was dominated by Dos Pueblos. The trio of Ellie Triplet, Mel Mayo and Zella Cassidy gave their squad a 7-2 advantage in singles en route to the win.
Keegan Withrow and Brielle Saarloos earned the singles victories for the Pirates.
Santa Ynez will begin league play against Lompoc on Tuesday.
