San Marcos girls volleyball cruised to a sweep over Rio Mesa, Bishop Diego picked up a four-set win over Foothill Tech and Santa Barbara High fell in a five-set matchup with Oxnard on Thursday.
San Marcos 3, Rio Mesa 0
The Royals took care of business against Rio Mesa, winning 25-14, 25-15, 25-7.
Lila Westmacott and Josie Gamberdella split the setting duties in the victory, spreading the ball to seven different hitters.
Of those hitters, Gracie Stone and Cora Loomer led the way with seven kills apiece while Samantha Fallon added in five of her own.
The Royals also got solid defensive contributions from Gianna Mandarino and Nica Green.
“The girls were composed and focused throughout the match and used this game to prepare for the Tournament of Champions this weekend,” San Marcos coach Dwayne Hauschild said.
San Marcos will begin its tournament on Friday at 2:30 p.m against Rosary.
Bishop Diego 3, Foothill Tech 1
The Cardinals bounced back from a first-set loss to come away with a road win over Foothill Tech, 25-27, 25-22, 25-18, 25-12.
Eliana Urzua exerted her dominance in the victory, collecting 30 kills, eight aces and a pair of blocks.
Sofia Parisotto set Urzua up for many of those kills, tallying 32 assists to go along with eight digs and four aces.
With the win, Bishop Diego improved to 7-10 overall and 2-2 in league play. They will compete in the Viewpoint Invitational this weekend.
Oxnard 3, Santa Barbara 2
The Dons dropped a back-and-forth battle with Oxnard in five sets, 25-21, 14-25, 14-25, 25-21, 15-11.
Nicole Schuetz showed out in the loss, registering 17 kills, seven blocks and four aces. Whitney Meister also contributed offensively, adding in 10 kills.
“I have to shout out Nicole Schuetz for her intensity tonight,” Santa Barbara coach Kristin Hempy said. “She was focused and on a roll and played really excellent volleyball.”
Tessa de Albegaria played well in the back row, recording 12 digs to go with her five aces. Setting the ball, Gwen Chenoweth racked up 21 assists with Stella Borgioli not far behind at 18 assists.
“Tessa also was on point in the back row for us, and our setters worked really hard as well,” Hempy said.
“Unfortunately as a team we struggled in the fourth and fifth sets, giving up too many unforced errors,” Hempy said. “It’s hard to win a volleyball match when you’re giving away free points.”
The Dons will have a quick turnaround, facing off against La Jolla as a part of the Tournament of Champions on Friday at 11 a.m.
“We look forward to a great weekend of competitive volleyball,” Hempy said.
Carpinteria 3, Nordhoff 0
The Warriors got a 16-kill effort from Averi Alexander in a sweep of Nordhoff, 25-20, 25-18, 25-19.
Along with Alexander’s performance, Jenny Valencia collected 15 assists and eight kills while putting together 19 service points.
Down 14-5 in game two, Valencia served 13 straight points to give Carpinteria all the momentum needed to pick up a win.
In the third and final set, Ashlee Mora, Alexiana Jaimes Jessie Marquez made their impacts felt on the defensive end to clinch the win.
The Warriors move to 8-5 on the season and 5-2 in league play.
La Reina 3, Cate 1
Cate fell behind early and couldn’t mount a comeback in a four-set loss to La Reina, 25-11, 25-23, 15-25, 25-17.
After La Reina dominated the first game, the Rams showed some fight in the second but La Reina still managed to come out on top and gain a commanding 2-0 lead.
The third set was all Cate, as they got out to an early lead and never looked back.
However, La Reina bounced back with a strong offensive effort in the fourth set to close out the match.
“La Reina is a well-rounded team and they showed that tonight,” Cate coach Jordon Dyer said. “For our side of the net, I think we played well and stepped up to the challenge.
“Never happy with a loss, but the silver lining is that we proved to ourselves that we can compete against a good team in La Reina and if we take advantage of opportunities, we can win.”
Melanie Davidson made an impact for the Rams, tallying a double-double in kills and assists for the third match in a row. Oyin Opawumi also turned in her best setting game of the season.
“Kudos to Oyin for stepping into a new position to help our team, she’s done a great job so far of embracing the change and helping her teammates,” Dyer said “Also, shoutout to Fallon Erickson for stepping up and playing well defensively and in serve-receive.”
The Rams will host St. Bonaventure on Tuesday.
