Addie Low’s monster 26-kill performance vaulted Dos Pueblos girls volleyball to a five-set reverse sweep over the Ventura Cougars at Sovine Gym on Thursday, 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 27-25, 16-14.
“Addie was outstanding tonight – she was absolutely unstoppable and just went off in the middle for 26 kills, which is not an easy feat for a middle to take that many swings,” Dos Pueblos coach Megan O’Carroll said. “She worked hard to make herself available on every single ball and it paid off.”
The Chargers got out to a slow start, dropping the first two sets before catching fire and winning three straight to come away with the win.
“The girls really stepped up and answered the call in the third set and then hung in there to take the fourth and fifth sets,” O’Carroll said. “Our passing and defense was exceptional for us tonight. We were getting so much up and there were bodies flying all over the gym to make some incredible hustle plays.”
Atasha Black did much of the dirty work for the Chargers on the defensive end, totaling 31 digs to go along with five assists and three aces.
Meanwhile, Hallie Rillie ran the offense to the tune of 42 assists while also gobbling up 32 digs on the defensive end.
“Halle was once again exceptional for us getting to every second ball to set up our offense,” O’Carroll said. “She was super smart using herself as an attacker as well and helped make her teammates look really good tonight. She and Addie combined for some monster blocks as well.”
Jayden Jones tallied a double-double for the Chargers with 20 digs and 13 kills while Madeleine Curtis put up 18 digs of her own. Charlize Welch chipped in 14 digs as well.
Dos Pueblos (9-2, 2-1 Channel League) will take on Buena on the road on Tuesday.
San Marcos 3, Rio Mesa 0
San Marcos earned its third straight Channel League win with a sweep of Rio Mesa, 25-15, 25-17, 25-14.
The Royals got contributions from all over the court, led by the middle duo of Cora Loomer and Jordan Schmoller. Loomer tallied six kills and five blocks while Schmoller collected five kills and a trio of blocks.
Avery Leck also had a strong all-around performance with four kills and eight digs. Gianna Mandarino and Isla McClintock contributed defensively as well.
San Marcos (9-1, 3-0 Channel League) will compete in the San Luis Obispo Invitational this weekend.
Oxnard 3, Santa Barbara High 2
The Dons fell just short in a five-set loss to the Oxnard Yellow Jackets on Thursday, 20-25, 25-15, 25-20, 15-25, 13-15.
“Though it stings to not clinch the fifth set and get the win, nonetheless there were a lot of encouraging signs tonight,” Santa Barbara High coach Kristin Hempy said.
Strong serving led the way for the Dons, who totaled 23 aces in the match. Keenan Engebretson led the way from the service line with 11 aces of her own.
Meanwhile, Blake Saunders racked up 14 kills and nine digs in the loss. Kira Elliot and Madi Priess each added seven kills while Engebretson ended the night with six.
Gwen Chenoweth was in the middle of the action all night with 35 assists, seven digs and three kills.
Santa Barbara High will take on San Marcos inside the Thunderhut on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Malibu 3, Carpinteria 2
In non-Channel League action, the Warriors fell in five sets to the Malibu Sharks, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 16-25, 11-15.
“We were right there,” Carpinteria coach Favian Muralles said. “The girls are running our system and showing grit and determination. We just need a little luck to grab a win and build our confidence. It will come.”
Caden Lemere had a solid night distributing the ball while MacKenna Tobin spearheaded the Warrior offensive attack.
Carpinteria (0-5, 0-3 CCL) face off against Channel Islands on the road on Tuesday.
