San Marcos girls water polo battled to a 9-8 win over a strong Long Beach Wilson team in the first game of the Newport Elite 8 Tournament on Thursday.
“The Newport Elite tournament is arguably the hardest tournament of the year,” San Marcos head coach Chuckie Roth said. “Five games against some of the best teams is a true test for any team to put together five quality games in a three-day period.”
The two sides ended the first quarter tied at 2-2, with the Royals scoring on a pair of goals by Jade Pattison off assists from Charlotte Raisin.
San Marcos took the advantage in the second quarter with goals from Raisin, Pattison and Lily Bordofsky to take a 5-3 advantage into halftime.
The Royals continued to roll in the fourth, getting goals from Raisin, Pattison and Sophie Yonker to build that lead up to 9-4 with one quarter to play.
Long Beach Wilson surged back with four unanswered goals in the fourth, but San Marcos goalie Bethany King came up with a clutch point-blank save in the final moments to seal the victory.
The Royals will take on Cathedral Catholic and Mater Dei in a doubleheader on Friday.
Dos Pueblos 19, Rio Mesa 7
The Chargers wrapped up their Channel League regular season schedule with a victory over the Spartans on Thursday at Elings Aquatic Center.
Dos Pueblos dominated the opening quarter, pouring nine goals while holding Rio Mesa scoreless to take a 9-0 lead into the second.
The Chargers continued to hold onto their comfortable advantage throughout the matchup en route to the win.
Cierra Furneaux celebrated her Senior Day with two goals and five saves on a day where 10 different Chargers scored. Mackenzie Beard scored her first three varsity goals for Dos Pueblos as well.
The Chargers (16-5, 5-1 Channel League) will compete in the SoCal Championships Tournament in Irvine this weekend.
Carpinteria High 17, Channel Islands 4
The Warriors excelled on both ends of the pool in a league win over the Raiders on Thursday.
Carpinteria spread around its offensive attack early, as every player scored in the opening half to build up a comfortable advantage.
Channel Islands put up a bit of a fight in the second half, but the Warriors quickly regained control and cruised to the win.
“We were specifically looking to build up our defense and not allow perimeter shots with very strong field blocking,” Carpinteria High head coach Russell Russo said.
“The girls really gave CI a good match, and I’m proud of how they were assisting and working for each other to make good use of the shot clock and extra passes in our front court.”
The Warriors will round out their regular season on the road against Nordhoff on Tuesday.
