Carly Letendre, Justine Katz and Gianna Nichols scored 16 points apiece to lead the Dos Pueblos girls to a 77-33 win over host Santa Clara in tournament action Thursday.
Lauren Robles rounded out the double figures with 13 points, adding four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Katz added 11 assists to notch a double-double, adding three rebounds and three steals. Sierra Jewel was the rebound leader with nine, adding seven points. Evette Allen had six points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal.
“I challenged my team after our loss yesterday (to Chatsworth) and they definitely responded,” DP coach Manny Murillo said. “They came out and played with great energy, attitude, and effort.
“It was a very balanced game offensively for us. … Carly Letendre did what she has been doing all season and was aggressive and hit some big shots but defensively she gave Santa Clara a lot of trouble picking up full court. We made 13 3s tonight shooting 46 percent from deep.”
But, he said, “it was our defense that won the game for us. Santa Clara had 23 points at half which I thought was too much. I set a goal for us to keep them under 35 and accomplished that only allowing 10 points in the second half and only allowing two in the fourth quarter.”
The Chargers face Calabasas Friday in the last test before heading into Channel League play. Dos Pueblos is 2-0 in league play and 7-7 overall.
Boys: Chaminade 54, San Marcos 44
The San Marcos boys took a 21-20 halftime lead against Chaminade College Prep High School Thursday, but struggled with the Eagles’ defensive pressure in the second half in a 54-44 loss.
Micah Jacobi led the Royals with 12 points and Wyatt Miller added 10.
“Chaminade is another good team on our very challenging non-league schedule this season,” said Coach James Kinzler. “I was proud of our defensive effort tonight and I thought we rebounded the ball well. Lots for us to learn in a competitive game like that.”
