The Bishop Diego boys got off to a hot start but had to fend off a persistent Foothill Tech squad to take a 66-60 non-league win at home Wednesday.

“They’re a disciplined team with a great coach, so I knew they wouldn’t go away very easily,” Cardinals coach James Coronado said.

Bryan Trejo led the Cardinals’ win with 19 points, and Isaac Veal chipped in 12. Sam Noah led the Dragons with 25 points.

After leading 23-10 after one quarter, Bishop Diego was outscored in the second half. Foul trouble contributed to the woes, as three starters got third or fourth fouls early in the third quarter.

“We needed a couple of bench players to step up and they just weren’t consistent enough to keep the lead,” Coronado said. “I felt we got some good minutes here and there, but just not consistent enough.

“A big credit to our leader, Bryan Trejo, who kept them at bay with his leadership and ball handling. They simply couldn’t stay in front of him, and whenever we needed a big bucket, he was up to the task.”

Bishop Diego improves to 10-6 overall.

Boys soccer: Santa Paula 4, Carpinteria 1

Carpinteria’s Ulises Segura scored an equalizer 21 minutes into a Citrus Coast League match at Santa Paula, but the league-leading Cardinals prevailed with a 4-1 on a rainy Wednesday night.

With the score tied, the Warriors kept the pressure on and created a couple more chances, but Santa Paula capitalized on Carpinteria mistakes and scored the go-ahead goal in the 32nd minute for a 2-1 lead.

The Warriors started the second half in control of the ball looking for another equalizer, but Santa Paula created a chance outside the box for a third goal in the 50th minute.

Carpinteria kept calm and tried to get a goal back, but it was the Cardinals who scored again off a set piece to make the final 4-1.

“The Warriors fought hard throughout the game, but we weren’t able to get the result we wanted,” Carpinteria coach Gerry Rodriguez said. “I’m proud of how hard they played. Now we look ahead to our next league game in Fillmore this Friday.”

Santa Paula 55, Carpinteria 42

Carpinteria senior Kainoa Glasgow scored 25 points Wednesday at home against Citrus Coast League rival Santa Paula, but the Cardinals came away with a 55-42 win.

Warriors junior Mario Serrano added seven points.

Carpinteria falls to 3-12 overall, and 1-2 in the CCL. The Warriors host Fillmore at 7:30 p.m. Friday in another CCL matchup.
