Sophomore Harry Hayman took on the challenge of playing several positions for the Bishop Diego boys volleyball team in a 25-16, 25-18, 25-21 sweep at Buena on Wednesday.
“On his 16th birthday, sophomore Harry Hayman came to play and filled a role as an outside hitter, libero, and setter with three kills, 10 digs, an ace and five assists,” said coach Dillan Bennett.
“I was so happy for Harry, who played almost every spot on the floor tonight on his birthday with almost no practice in the outside hitter and setter position. As coaches, you never know when you may need to call upon an unsung hero to come in and make a difference. Harry accepted the challenge, and gave us a few options when we were down a few players due to spring break commitments.”
Braylon Katers led all scorers with 15 kills, and Liam Flood and John Michael Flint added 8 kills.
“This was a great trip for our guys over spring break. We had the opportunity to play a few lineups in preparation for our last three matches heading into playoffs,” said Bennett.
The Cardinals (18-11 overall) host Camarillo on Thursday at 5 p.m.
Laguna Blanca 3, Foothill Tech 0
Laguna Blanca completed a Tri-Valley League volleyball sweep of Foothill Tech, winning the second of back-to-back matches, 25-12, 25-16, 25-17, in Ventura on Wednesday.
The Owls are now 7-0 in league and 16-3 overall.
Thomas Couvillion recorded a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs to pace Laguna. Tyson Deveze had nine kills and six digs and Ganden Walker added seven kills.
“Our solid serve-receive passing allowed our offense to perform at a high level, as we hit .360 on the evening,” said assistant coach Kat Niksto.
The Owls have senior night against Cate on Thursday.
Beach Volleyball
Laguna Blanca girls beach volleyball beat Providence 3-2 today.
The Owls won at the Nos. 3, 4, and 5 positions.
Paloma Lujan and Natalie Bianchi, won in 3 sets, 18-21, 21-11, 15-5, at the 3s.
Regina Lujan and Sarah Woodhouse, won 21-7, 21-6 at the 4s.
The 5s of freshmen Sophie Otte and Ginger Finney, won 21-6, 21-5.
“I am proud of how our girls are growing each week and it feels like it is really coming together right in time for playoffs,” said coach Jenny Sims.
