Laguna Blanca Sophomore Carson Stewart scored 18 points and collected 8 rebounds, but a fourth quarter Owls comeback fell short in a 51-43 Frontier League loss to Foothill Tech 51-43 at Ventura College Tuesday night.
Laguna Blanca took an early lead late in the first quarter, but a poor second quarter allowed the Dragons to expand to a 12 point lead at halftime, 29-17. Foothill expanded that lead to 20 points in the third quarter.
The Owls fought back, pulling to within seven point midway through the fourth quarter. However, a Dragon score on a long 3-pointer helped slow the comeback.
“We played pretty even with Foothill, who was the league preseason favorite prior to Dunn School’s transfers,” Laguna Banca coach Phil Sherman said. “If not for a few ill-advised decisions, we would be in the game. The kids did a good job adjusting to Foothill’s switching defenses.”
Fillmore 70, Carpinteria 38
The Carpinteria boys lost a Citrus Coast League game against Fillmore Tuesday, 70-38.
Carpinteria senior Kainoa Glasgow led the Warriors with 14 points.
The Warriors play their final game of the season on Thursday night against Malibu. The team will be celebrating the program’s seven seniors: Kainoa Glasgow, Rodolfo Jimenez, Israel Samaguey, Paul Bitters, Raul Jimenez, Connor Gralewski and Peter Frias-Fuduric.
Girls Soccer: Fillmore 4, Carpinteria 1
The Carpinteria girls lost a Citrus Coast League match with Fillmore Tuesday, 4-1.
The injury-depleted Warriors took to the field without three starters due to concussion protocol.
Fillmore took a 1-0 halftime lead and expanded it to 4-0 by the 72nd minute.
“We had few offensive sparks from Ashley Verdusco and Sophia Mora, but our shooting opportunities we few and far between,” Warrior coach Freddy Martinez said.
In the 74th minute, Verduzco was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick that she finished off for the consolation goal.
“This was just one of those games you need to put behind and focus on the next,” Martinez said.
That will be Wednesday night, as Carpinteria hosts Malibu for the Senior Night game.
“With our depleted roster, I had to call on players to sub into positions they were not normally asked to play, and today I may have found a future midfielder from junior Luna Galvan, who has been playing defender all season,” Martinez said. “She did a great job there today.
